I recall my introduction to aromatherapy and how intrigued I was by the various applications of essential oils, eager to experiment with them. In hindsight, I recognize that I should have conducted more research before delving into aromatherapy. Here is some advice I wish I’d received as a beginner in aromatherapy:

1. Buy One or Two Aromatherapy Books

Begin your aromatherapy library with just one or two books and opt for general resource books that provide basic information and help you identify your areas of greatest interest.

2. Join Aromatherapy Discussion Forums

Facebook Groups, Instagram pages, and other forums are excellent resources. You can read previous discussions, ask questions, and gain knowledge from others.

3. Choose Five or Ten Essential Oils to Start

While you might feel inclined to purchase more, start with just five or ten essential oils. Since essential oils can be costly, consider experimenting with a few initially and then investing in more if you choose to delve deeper into aromatherapy.

4. Make Sure to Buy 100%, Pure, Unadulterated Essential Oils

When purchasing essential oils, opt for a reputable and well-known manufacturer. Synthetic, fragrance, and perfume oils are not essential oils; they include artificial chemicals and lack aromatherapeutic benefits.

5. Buy at Least One Carrier Oil

For most topical aromatherapy uses, essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil. Sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, and grapeseed oil are excellent all-purpose carrier options. Purchase cosmetic grade carrier oils and add just a few drops of essential oil(s) per ounce of carrier oil.

6. Store Your Oils Properly

Essential oils must be kept in dark glass bottles. Due to their volatile nature, ensure the lids are tightly sealed. Both essential oils and carrier oils should be kept away from heat and light. Carrier oils can become rancid over time, so purchasing smaller amounts is advisable.

7. Learn How to Do a Patch Test

Essential oils may lead to adverse reactions, either from allergies or from sensitization over time. A patch test can identify if you might have a reaction to a specific essential oil. Research how to conduct a skin patch test on yourself for each new oil you plan to use on your skin.

8. Don't Use Aromatherapy with Children or Pets

Do not use essential oils on children, pets, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding until you fully understand their properties and safety concerns. Cats, in particular, might have negative reactions to essential oils. Ensure that essential oils are stored where children cannot access them.

9. Don't Ingest Essential Oils

While there is conflicting information regarding the internal use of essential oils, it's best to avoid consuming them. Essential oils that are relatively safe for topical application can be highly toxic when ingested. Furthermore, certain essential oils might interact with prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Final note: As you delve into and discover more about aromatherapy, your confidence in using essential oils will grow. There's a lot to explore, so enjoy and as always stay safe!
